TMJD Pain Management and Treatment with Massage Therapy

Have you ever experienced clicking or "popping" on the side of your jaw?  Facial pain while chewing or taking a bite and even
talking?  These are possible signs and symptoms of a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJD).

Dentists usually prescribe a mouth guard for this problem.  However, gentle, relaxing massage with techniques to address
the jaw and facial area have proven to give tremendous relief to many.

Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

Other symptoms include:
  • ringing in the ears
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • back pain
  • shoulder pain

Causes include

  • Bruxism - pathological clenching and grinding of the teeth during sleep caused by stress
  • whiplash injuries
  • trauma to the neck and jaw area
  • arthritis of the TMJ
  • poor postural habits
  • uneven bite
  • intracapsular disorder
  • slipping or tearing of the joint's cushioning pad or disk
  • abnormal positioning of the joint

Treatment

  • massage therapy techniques
  • trigger point release techniques
  • post-isometric relaxation techniques
  • intra-oral techniques
  • joint play
*Full body stress-management massage is very effective to those suffering from
TMJ disorders.  Bruxism can be decreased with 5 full body
stress-management massage treatments given on a weekly basis.  Getting rid of
bruxism is an important factor that will allow the surrounding muscles to be
restored to normal metabolism and prevent re-accumulation of tension in the musles.
Once the body is more relaxed, there are less chances of the grinding and clenching
while you sleep.
