Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the constriction of the median nerve that passes under the carpal ligament on the palmar side of the wrist.  

Causes:
  • micro-trauma through low force and high repetitive movements
  • repeated flexion / extention movements
  • extreme wrist postures - especially sitting infront of the computer
  • idiopathic (unknown)
  • increase in the size of the contents going thru the carpal tunnel 
  • bony changes that occur with Rheumatoid arthritis


Result:

  • inflammation response in the carpal tunnel
  • tightness of the muscles


Signs and symptoms:
  • pain
  • numbness
  • tingling sensation


Prevention:

  • stretching the forearm flexors and extensors everyday
  • hydrotherapy in the form of contrast arm baths is excellent for flushing out the build up   of metabolic waste in the arm and hand
  • massage therapy to increase circulation in the area and decrease muscle tone
  • posture correction when working at the computer - ensure your shoulders are relaxed, with elbows supported by arm rests and wrists in neutral position with the forearms parallel to the floor.
