Written by Amaal
Tendonitis is simply the inflammation of a tendon.

What is a tendon?
A tendon is the end of a muscle attaching to the bone.

Cause:
  • Chronic overload of the tendon leading to microtearing and an inflammatory response in the tendon.

Common areas affected:

  • shoulder, knee, elbow, ankle and wrist

Contributing factors:

  • muscle imbalances
  • poor biomechanics
  • lack of flexibility
  • poor blood supply to the tendon
  • improper equipment and training errors

Symptoms:

  • inflammation (pain, swelling, redness, heat, altered sensation)
  • decreased range of motion
  • adhesion formation
  • tendon degeneration

Self Care:

  • decrease overuse of the tendon
  • hydrotherapy in the form of ice for 20 minutes immediately after activity
  • slow, painfree stretches

Prevention:

  • massage therapy
  • regular stretches to the short and tight muscles
  • strengthening of the weak muscles not being used
